Advancing Chinese Language Proficiency and Culture

The CAIS Institute, a nonprofit organization, represents the epicenter for integrating Chinese language and culture into American education. Because Chinese shares fewer commonalities with English than such languages as Spanish and French, its teaching demands a different approach based not only on language but also on culture.

The Asia Society proposes a goal of 5% of American high school students—750,000—studying Chinese by 2015. Such an ambitious and necessary program requires advancing curricula, enhancing teaching skills and providing more qualified instructors today.

Drawing on our groundbreaking experience with the Chinese American International School, the CAIS Institute has become the de facto national resource for expanding Chinese language and cultural education by:

• Developing specialized curricula and materials targeting a North American audience

• Finding qualified Chinese language teachers and helping them adapt to American educational methods

• Helping schools to develop and maintain Chinese language programs

Our mission and vision focus on accomplishing these objectives.
