Thanks to funding from STARTALK, CAIS Institute, in partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District, offered over 60 students the opportunity to study Mandarin Chinese this summer- for free!

2009 SUMMER PROGRAM RECAP

High School Summer Intensive Chinese Program
This program was open to all Bay Area high school students with very little background in Chinese. Students who participated in this program studied Chinese Level I and II in concurrent one-month sessions. Upon successful completion of this course, students earned up to one full year of San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) foreign language credit. In addition to intensive language lessons, students participated in daily of cultural activities designed to promote cultural understand and reinforce language learning. Such activities included:

  • Martial arts
  • Chinese music
  • Chinese brush painting
  • Chinese calligraphy

Mandarin Immersion Camp, Grades 1-3
In an effort to support San Francisco’s two new elementary Mandarin immersion public school programs (Starr King Elementary School and Jose Ortega Elementary School), CAIS Institute offered students an opportunity to participate a Mandarin Immersion Summer Camp for grades 1-3. In collaboration with San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), CAIS Institute developed a tailored curriculum reinforced the existing curriculum from both schools; thereby furthering the children’s language and cultural learning.

In addition to language reinforcement and acquisition, students participated in daily cultural activities (also taught in Chinese), including:

  • Martial arts
  • Gymnastics
  • Chinese brush painting
  • Chinese cooking
  • Chinese bookmaking

2010 Summer Chinese Programs
CAIS Institute will be reapplying for STARTALK funding to continue Mandarin language programs during the summer of 2010. Please check our website periodically for updates and details.
